Storyline: Chris Faraday once smuggled illegal items or contraband into the country on freighters. He left that life behind, got married, has a family and went legit. But when his brother-in-law got involved with Briggs, a drug dealer and when he blew a deal, Briggs demands restitution which he can't deliver. So Chris offers to find a way to pay Briggs but then he threatens Chris' family if he doesn't deliver. So he gets on a freighter destined for Panama and he sets out to bring back some counterfeit currency. Briggs "goes to see" Chris' family. When Chris learns of this he asks his friend Sebastian to take care of them which he does. He tells Chris that it would be better to bring drugs instead of the cash.

An entertaining popcorn flick, but ultimately forgettable
Former contraband smuggler turned legit family man, Chris Farraday (Mark Wahlberg) finds himself back in the game after his brother-in-law gets in over his head with mobster Tim Briggs (Giovanni Ribisi). Now Chris has two weeks to get the money that's owed to Tim or he'll kill his whole family in this remake of an Icelandic film.

If not for the star power involved, I strongly suspect we would be watching a straight-to- DVD type deal. Don't get me wrong, if it had gone that route it would be an upper echelon DTV movie, but as a cinema released film it's just a tad too cliché and overtly familiar to be that memorable. It's stylized and entertaining enough, but there's not really any meat here. A decent popcorn flick no more, no less.

My Grade: C
Average at best.
Today's film I randomly caught on TV. I was hooked from the start, wasn't even in the mood for a movie, it just caught my eye.

It seems like such a generic film, nothing overly interesting or original about the plot, it's carried by great actors. Marky Mark puts in some work, being a large portion of why I even continued to watch this movie. The script seems to be a mash up of clichés, from the one last heist to the we have your family bit.

It isn't something you need to see, but it's something worth seeing.

Keeps adrenaline flowing
This film tells the story of a ex smuggler who turned clean. His brother in law gets into trouble with a drug lord, and he has to go to Panama to do shady businesses to get things right. However, the journey is a bumpy one because there is seemingly no one he can trust.

The plot is an exciting one, because there is one situation after another. The constant struggles and fights with both the dark side and the bright side keeps the adrenaline going, especially when you think you can trust someone but you really cannot. It is also refreshing to see that the man hero is not portrayed to be invincible, but a regular guy who people can relate to.
A decent but typical Drug Heist
A thriller cum heist movie with some of the ingenuity of Oceans Eleven but minus the flair, 'Contraband' combines a respectably engaging plot with otherwise generally bland characters. This is, apart from J.K Simmons who expertly combined a brand of gruffness, humour and cynicism in a very Simminsesque role, not too unlike his J. Jonah Jameson persona from the 'Spider Man' films. The real drawback of the film was the failure to delve deeper within Ben Foster's already complex and disturbed character, Sebastian, who could have potentially driven the film. It wasn't a compelling, new spin on a drug heist but neither did it fail miserably.
Implausible story.
If you like movies where every principal character is a bad guy, then this movie will definitely be for you. Plausibility is thrown to the wind as the creators of this movie have a field day showing what happens when bad guys are in conflict with even badder guys. The problem with the story is that the "good" guy is really a bad guy who is trying to pass himself off as a good guy, which is so phony that even the other characters in the story don't believe it, and if they don't believe it, then don't expect the audience to believe it either. Mark Wahlberg is a wonderful actor and he proves it again in this movie. But he can't overcome his character's incomprehensible behavior. It's one thing for one brother to want to help out another brother - that is altruistic. However, it's something else entirely when the same brother does exactly the same thing that got the other brother into trouble. Nevertheless, there is some good acting and Kate Beckinsdale is as usual beautiful and probably played the most believable role.
Great Action Film with Many Twists
In New Orleans, the former smuggler Chris Faraday (Mark Wahlberg) has regenerated and raised a family of his own with his wife Kate (Kate Beckinsale) and their two children. Chris works in installation of alarms and his father in locked in prison for smuggling.

When his brother-in-law Andy (Caleb Landry Jones) dumps in the sea water 10 pounds of cocaine that he is smuggling for the drug lord Tim Briggs (Giovanni Ribisi) to escape from the custom officers, Chris is forced to pay Andy's debts to protect the youngster and his own family. Chris leaves his wife and children under the protection of his best friend Sebastian Abney (Ben Foster) and travels in a Container Carrier to Panama to bring counterfeit bills and raise the money to pay Briggs. But Briggs and his partner want to force Chris to smuggle drugs and will use his family to reach their objective. Meanwhile Chris is betrayed and gets in trouble in Panama.

"Contraband" is a great action film with an engaging story that combines action, thriller and drama. The cast is excellent with Mark Wahlberg in the lead role and Giovanni Ribisi is almost unrecognizable in the role of a cruel drug dealer. The plot has many twists with betrayals and the cinematography in New Orleans and Panama is wonderful. The ironic conclusion is a sort of contemporary "The Sting". My vote is eight.

Title (Brazil): "Contrabando" ("Contraband")
Unbelievably bad, 10 insane plot lines twisting around.

Mark Wahlberg in this movie has to face insane odds, and beats them all with magical luck and his super smuggler brains. His stupid friend keeps making unbelievably bad decisions, of course. There are some really really evil characters as well, and of course all the evil ones do drugs and the goodies have all gone straight. Luckily, despite everyone seeming to want to ruin Mark's family for no reason whatsoever, the motives being very unclear, Mark manages to save his family and become a multimillionaire and lived happily ever after. The movie also shows us that the bad guys went to prison and were beaten up by the other inmates, of course! This movie just made me angry that it had a decent IMDb score and that it pretended to be somewhat on the scale of possible, so I don't use the phrase 'realistic' because that would be another spectrum. Very frustrating to watch a cast and budget botched so badly.
The dull tone left me unengaged and the bigger moments left me behind
I quite like Mark Wahlberg and wanted to watch this film despite the so- so reviews it had received. The plot sees Wahlberg's character drawn back into the smuggling game he was once so great at, in order to pay off a debt his brother-in-law owes to a drug-dealer. This involves getting on a boat to Panama and bringing back a package – but even this is not as simple as it seems.

Starting this film as a couple, we made it about 20 minutes in before my partner decided she was bored of it already and didn't want to watch any more. I finished by myself another time and have to admit that I can see why she felt this way because the film has a very slow and rather ordinary pace to it. The plot doesn't help because the first half seems quite ordinary and without too much going on to actually draw you in. There isn't a sense of danger even though there is violence – it felt like acting rather than real within the context of the story. In the middle of the film there is a lot of action and rapid events but these get too big, too quickly and I really didn't buy them – mainly because the previous parts of the film hadn't done much to engage me up till that point. From here the darker tone continues and lots happens on the way to a far too tidy ending, but too much of it just feels too convenient and easy and I wasn't buying into any of it, which is a real shame because delivered better it might have worked.

The direction is far too dark and lacking in energy and tension – lives are on the line but it didn't come across that way. Wahlberg does his usual solid turn but the material isn't there for him and his character doesn't always work well. Foster is better towards the end, more convincing and has something to do, but Ribisi doesn't add much beyond ticking boxes. Beckinsdale is good looking but is limited in what she has to actually do, while Haas, Simmons and some other recognizable faces show up in support.

It is a rather ordinary film overall; it has a drab tone and poor pacing that kept me from getting into it – but then suddenly asks me to go along with bigger moments and rather contrived denouncements, which is hard to do while watching from the outside. Might fill the time as a so- so drama but it is nothing more than average.
Loads of fun!
It's implausible, clichéd (I'm sick of that word), not the best script, not-always perfect acting etc. etc. etc. and etc.

Now that the obvious stuff is out of the way;

It's tonnes of fun!

The film was a bit 'too' by-the-numbers in the beginning I'll admit that but I got a "we're getting on really well and having a laugh making this" vibe from all of the actors which helped because there wasn't really any chemistry built between the characters so the fact that the actors themselves seemed to have it was a plus.

About halfway through and then all the way to the end, the film kicks into gear and is seriously entertaining.

Don't read the next two lines if you don't even like hints at what happens in films (it's not a spoiler but you might guess what I meant while watching the film):

**At one point...I thought Hollywood had finally broken the mould and done something the audience didn't want to see...but no**

I felt that what I mentioned above might have helped to make this unique from all the other "must save family by breaking the law" type films out there and give it some credibility (in a weird way..!)

But the fact that this film has Ben Foster in it is enough anyway.

Acting wise everyone does their usual stuff. Some is amazing and some is standard...Giovanni Ribisi is outstanding and the only one that I felt bothered to transform himself into a believable scumbag.

Everyone else was a little too "clean" looking and sounding.

Great film and definitely one to watch, just don't be expecting anything thought-provoking (obviously)

8/10 for sheer enjoyment factor...I may even watch it again.
One of Mark's Best
From the very beginning to the dramatic end, the movie is thrilling. There is not a scene in the movie which drags the story and every bit is to a point. His acting is simple, on point and brilliant as usual and this is one of the best smuggling films i would add to, after Italian job and various others make to a good list. The fact that it brings family, friendship, love, hate, betrayal and the usual bad guy in the film may make it sound all ordinary as most of the films have almost the same characters these days, but the reason i would ask you guys to watch this film is because the touch it has unlike most of them out these days.

I don't think timing is any bit of a problem in this movie and the way in which the scenes unfold is what i think keep you at the edge of your seat through the movie. Anywhoo, A must watch! I loved it personally.
